The Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD-6 4×4 SRX is the sweet spot in the Hilux range. This engine produces 110 kW, but with class-leading torque of 400 Nm. This engine version is matched with a new 6-speed manual transmission with wider gear ratios contributing to improved efficiency. In fact, Toyota says this engine is 16% more efficient than the motor it replaces with a claimed combined fuel consumption of 7.3 L/100 km. Low-end torque has been beefed up and a reduced compression ratio has resulted in lower emissions and less strain on the engine. As we discovered, it’s quiet and refined out on the road, too.
Furthermore, towing capacity for this 2.4 GD-6 4×4 SRX derivative is rated at 3 200 kg.Toyota’s engineers have improved the Hilux's ride quality appreciably. With a simple flick of the new electronic 4WD switch, the driver can easily engage toggle between 2H, 4H and 4L modes (the system supersedes the secondary lever that featured in the previous-generation Hilux).
Sand roads aee no obstacle for the new Hilux – it simply glides over them with absolute confidence. We are impressed by the bakkie's steering feel, which is accurate and direct, the engine's extra torque comes in handy in deeper sand sections, where the new 6-speed manual transmission proves smooth to use. Overall, this new 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine was very impressive. It packs a punch in the rough stuff and is refined and quiet on the road.
