It goes without saying that the current state of the economy has caused many consumers to become cash-strapped. Exponential price increases within the new-car market have made it even more difficult for consumers to purchase brand-new vehicles simply because they are not affordable.

This makes the used-car market the ideal place for many to shop for their next ‘new’ car. Interestingly, the pre-owned vehicle market in South Africa has traditionally had a larger market share compared to new vehicles. However, due to the nature of the pre-owned market, individuals must take precautions when purchasing a used car.

CHANGECARS’ business model is based on providing consumers with vehicles solely from 5-star rated dealerships; we aim to empower potential customers with the correct information to ensure that their purchasing journey is as hassle-free as possible.

While the idea of shopping in the used-car market may seem simple enough, there are several tips and considerations that consumers should keep at the top of their minds, and they are as follows:

1.        Establishing a strict budget to adhere to – It may seem miniscule, but many consumers tend to overlook this and find themselves getting carried away. Establishing a strict budget will assist a consumer in looking in the right direction for the vehicle of their choice. Understanding the type of vehicle one is looking for, according to their lifestyle needs, is also an important factor that may be considered when establishing a budget.

For example, a consumer shouldn’t look for low-slung, high-performance vehicle options when their lifestyle requires them to have a small, budget crossover. Adhering to a budget and vehicle options suited to a specific individual requires discipline; however, it may be rewarding when the said individual finds the right vehicle within their stipulated budget.

2.        Ensuring the chosen vehicle is in good condition – It goes without saying that buying from an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) may come with the peace of mind that the used car will be in good condition; a consumer can’t always be too certain – never mind third-party dealerships. The reality is that most consumers don’t have sound mechanical knowledge of vehicles, which is a disadvantage to them, as, at times, they may be sold a vehicle with mechanical or technical issues without realising it.

Used cars are usually accompanied by a DEKRA report, which essentially outlines any issues the car may have and its overall rating of condition. The caveat to these reports, however, is that they tend to lack honesty and mostly outline what the seller wants the report to contain.

Thankfully, consumers have options in this regard. Purchasing a vehicle from an OEM-approved franchise means that the dealership will have professional mechanics working in its service departments who will assess the vehicle before it is sold.

Alternatively, buyers can use a 3rd party service such as www.screan.co.za, which performs a mechanical inspection, service history review, and detailed assessment of the car’s exterior and interior. The benefit of such a service provider is that they are independent and protect the consumer rather than the seller.

3.        Purchasing extended service/maintenance plans - Consumers may consider purchasing extended service and/or maintenance plans. There is no greater peace of mind than knowing that your car’s annual servicing is taken care of and that, should any major issues occur, the maintenance plan will sort these out.

Many consumers may see these additional costs as a waste of money; however, in the long run, they protect you from unexpected costs should your car suffer from sudden issues. One thing to note is to ensure reading the fine print to understand what is and isn’t covered by service/ maintenance plans.
