Toyota GR Yaris on show

With more power, fresh styling, and an available automatic gearbox, the 2024 Toyota GR Yaris promises to be more fun to drive than ever.

Toyota is serious about producing exquisite driver’s cars alongside their more-pedestrian offerings, and they’re also clearly committed to improving even their finest work to date. Meet the 2024 Toyota GR Yaris, introduced recently at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Seeing as the GR Yaris has been around for a year or three already, it’s only logical that Toyota would apply incremental improvements to their little homologation special. This round of updates is more extensive than you’d think, and amounts to much more than just the usual bumper-and-lights job. The 2024 revision includes a host of invisible improvements, with more power and the new arrival of a racing-optimised automatic gearbox being notable highlights.

Here's the GR Yaris badge up close, for those who will get left in the dust by this diminutive homologation missile! Thanks to strengthened internal components, the latest version of the GR Yaris’s 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbo mill now produces 213 kW and 390 Nm, and it can be specified with a bespoke 8-speed automatic gearbox which was developed for and on the motorsport scene in addition to the standard 6-speed manual. This new transmission was optimised for sharper downshifts and offers predictive gear changes, adapting to changing conditions based on the driver’s interaction with the accelerator- and brake pedals.

The bodyshell is stiffer as well, and the suspension was revised for more feedback and even more road grip. Cosmetic changes amount to new bumpers and light clusters at both ends, and there are also a new dashboard and a lower seating position to better suit motorsport requirements. Expect the updated Toyota GR Yaris to arrive in South Africa either at the end of 2024 or early in 2025.
