While receiving a host of improvements, the 2024 Lexus LC update also sees it losing the charismatic V8. Could this be a case of less being more?

One of the main attractions in the Lexus LC has always been its howling 5.0-litre V8 engine, but this 2024 facelift drops the legendary engine in favour of a vastly more efficient hybridised V6. While the new powertrain loses quite a bit of power, there is a clever new transmission to eliminate the dreaded elastic-band sensation associated with hybrids.

The latest Lexus LC 500h has to make do with total system outputs of 264 kW and 500 Nm, instead of the outgoing V8’s 351 kW and 540 Nm, but it benefits from the instant torque inherent in electric motors to provide sharp throttle response and improved power from a standstill.

The rear of the 2024 Lexus LCSwapping the V8 for a lighter V6 also brings handling advantages due to improved weight distribution, while a myriad of detail changes to the steering hardware and suspension tuning bring greater driving precision and more predictable handling. And, because the LC 500h features a bespoke transmission which combines an eCVT with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, the V6 engine and electric motor deliver performance which almost matches that of the V8 model.

The interior technology also receives a boost, thanks to a new high-res colour touchscreen interface which eliminates the non-user-friendly touchpad used before. Safety specifications are likewise improved, with a surround-view camera instead of the old reversing camera, enhanced adaptive cruise control capabilities, and expanded collision detection operation.

2024 Lexus LC 500h prices start at R 2 542 800, and includes a vehicle warranty and maintenance plan for 7 years or 105 000 km, and a hybrid battery warranty for 8 years or 150 000 km, whichever comes first.
