The Ford Capri name is being revived in truly what has to be one of the ugliest cars from the Blue Oval since the Edsel and the newcomer is fully electric – even though it does keep the rear-wheel drive status of the iconic original.
It’s no shocker that Ford’s latest offering is a battery-powered crossover, given it has alreadymade that move with the Mustang.

Similar to the Ford Explorer in the European market, the new Capri rides on Volkswagen’s MEB all-electric platform. This setup comes from a collaborative agreement that also has Ford South Africa building the new Amarok.
To my mind, from the images it looks like a SUV that has had the top squashed down to try and give it a bit of a coupé styling and while Ford said it ’has put in a bit of effort to make the new Capri echo the classic model, especially with its fastback profile, C-shaped rear windows and recessed headlight units with dual lighting elements in modern Matrix LED form’ I am not buying it..
The bright Vivid Yellow paint option is a nod to the classic Capri, while the range of wheel sizes — 19, 20, or 21 inches — adds a modern touch.
European buyers can choose between two power options: a base rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model with 210 kW and 545 Nm, which can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6,4 seconds and a spicier all-wheel-drive (AWD) version with 250 kW and 545 Nm, hitting 0-100 km/h in 5,3 seconds.
Both models are powered by a lithium-ion NMC battery, with the RWD and AWD versions offering 77 kWh and 79 kWh capacities, respectively. The claimed WLTP ranges are 627 km for the RWD and 592 km for the AWD, although those numbers are likely under ideal conditions.

Inside, you’ll find a 14,6-inch SYNC Move central infotainment system and a 5,0-inch digital instrument cluster. Standard features include heated front sports seats with a massage function for the driver, dual-zone climate control, and a seven-speaker sound system with a soundbar. The Premium version adds a 10-speaker B&O sound system, adjustable ambient lighting, and a hands-free tailgate.
Amko Leenarts, Ford’s director of design for the Capri, says, “Inside, I think this is exactly how an original Capri driver would have expected the future to feel.”
Err, no!
Ford South Africa hasn’t confirmed if the new Capri will hit local shores, but the larger Mach-E is in the pipeline for potential EV buyers.
