BYD South Africa, although an active player in the South African auto market, has kept a low profile since the original launch of the ATTO but recently turned the spotlight on itself with the launch of its newest full electric model, the SEAL 7.

The launch, which included a closer look at the ATTO 3 and DOLPHIN models, gave attendees a chance to get up close and personal with the vehicles – BYD having closed off 2023 with sales exceeding 3,02-million units of new energy vehicles (NEVs), achieving a top 10 ranking in global new car sales for the first half of 2024. Notably, in July 2024, BYD became the first automaker globally to reach the milestone of producing its eight millionth new energy vehicle.

The BYD SEAL 7 is a family sedan that features specifications such as an extended range, responsive handling, rapid acceleration and robust battery capacity. Meanwhile, the ATTO 3 and DOLPHIN models also highlighted the Blade Battery technology, advanced e-platform 3.0, and revised designs. Together, these vehicles reflect BYD's commitment to meeting the diverse preferences of South African consumers seeking sustainable mobility options.

"The introduction of the BYD SEAL 7 is a significant addition to our line-up, complementing the DOLPHIN and ATTO 3 hatchbacks. This expansion addresses the varied needs of local drivers," says Steve Chang, General Manager of BYD South Africa. "We want to ensure South Africans are part of the global electric vehicle movement, providing them with the opportunity to experience our cutting-edge technology and the new EV lifestyle."

BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams, has a storied history of over 20 years in the automotive sector, having originally begun as a battery manufacturer in 1995 before branching into cars in 2003. The company now operates in more than 50 countries.

In response to global climate challenges, BYD aims to help lower temperatures by one degree Celsius through its vehicle line-up and technologies that eliminate tailpipe emissions, thereby reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases. This initiative is particularly timely in South Africa, where power outages due to loadshedding pose significant challenges. BYD’s electric vehicles can be charged via solar, AC or DC, providing a reliable transportation solution even during energy shortages.

"BYD South Africa is dedicated to delivering affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport solutions," added Ming Xing, underscoring the company's commitment to addressing the impacts of loadshedding while fostering sustainable development.

The newly launched BYD SEAL 7, ATTO 3, and DOLPHIN offer South African consumers numerous benefits, including reduced operating costs, lower carbon emissions, a smooth and quiet ride and advanced safety features.

With a focus on technological innovation, BYD has significantly impacted various industries, including electronics, automotive, renewable energy and rail transit. As a publicly listed company on both the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges, BYD reported an impressive annual revenue of over RMB 602-billion in 2023.

In addition to its vehicle line-up, BYD is pushing the boundaries of the electric vehicle industry with its innovative Yisifang Platform, also known as the e? platform. This advanced system enhances traditional automotive power systems through a three-dimensional approach that includes perception, decision-making, and execution, ensuring a comprehensive driving experience.
