Exciting news for South Africans as the all-new Kia Niro has just landed at some local dealerships, bringing a wave of eco-friendly innovation to our shores. Kia South Africa has officially stated to us that no EVs are on the cards for market introduction however, another close source has indicated that there’s a possibility it could go on sale as soon as March 2025. Only time will tell at this point.

With its range of ‘green’ flavors, including hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fully electric vehicles (EVs), the Niro would make a significant impact on the market. At the time of writing (October 2024), we don’t have detailed information on pricing, model line-up, or specifications.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

The Niro HEV features a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with a 32kW electric motor, producing a combined output of 104kW. This efficient setup targets a claimed average fuel consumption of just 4.8L/100km. With a claimed maximum driving range of 946km, it makes for long trips without frequent stops for fuel, offering peace of mind for adventurous drivers, and we can only assume that most consumers would be most interested in this model.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

For those seeking more power and flexibility, the Niro PHEV will be right up their alley. It uses the same 1.6-litre petrol engine but is paired with a larger 62kW electric motor, bringing the total power output up to 134kW. This model also includes an 11.1kWh battery, allowing for an all-electric driving range of up to 53km.

Both the HEV and PHEV come with a “Green Zone” drive mode, which allows drivers to switch to electric-only driving in residential areas, near schools, and hospitals, minimizing noise and air pollution where it matters most.

Fully Electric Vehicle (EV)

Sitting at the top of the lineup is the fully electric Niro EV. With a powerful 150kW motor and a 64.8kWh lithium-ion battery, this model offers an impressive driving range of up to 407km on a single charge. Thanks to clever regenerative braking, you can extend your range even further.

When it comes to charging, the Niro EV is designed for convenience. Depending on the power output of a DC fast charger, one may recharge from 10% to 80% in under 45 minutes, making it perfect for busy urban lifestyles.
